Prague commissioned the opera after Mozart's successful visit to the city earlier in 1787, and Lorenzo Da Ponte wrote the libretto. The premiere had been planned for October 14, but the opera was not ready in time.
Mozart conducted the first performance at the National Theatre of Bohemia, known today as the Estates Theatre. The building still stands.
