Women could not study at university in Russian-ruled Poland, so she moved to Paris in 1891 and studied at the Sorbonne. With her husband Pierre she discovered two new elements, polonium and radium, and she coined the word "radioactivity".

She shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and won the 1911 prize in Chemistry alone. Years of work with radioactive materials damaged her health, and she died in 1934.
