Tchaikovsky conducted the first performance of his Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique, at the Hall of Nobles in St. Petersburg. The orchestra was cool and the audience was puzzled, especially by the slow, somber ending.
Nine days later the composer was dead, most likely of cholera. Three weeks after the premiere, Eduard Nápravník conducted the symphony again at a memorial concert.
