The agreement was signed at about 5 a.m. in the railway carriage of the Allied commander, Marshal Ferdinand Foch, in the forest of Compiègne. It came into force at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Fighting went on until the last minute, and thousands of soldiers were killed or wounded that morning. The day is still marked as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. In 1940 Hitler made France sign its own armistice in the same carriage.
