On the eve of Halloween, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air performed H. G. Wells's novel live on CBS radio at 8 p.m. The first two thirds of the hour were told as news bulletins about Martians landing in New Jersey.
Newspapers reported widespread panic, though historians now think the scare was much smaller than claimed. It remains one of the most famous broadcasts ever made.
