The film began as a single short, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, starring Mickey Mouse. Disney and conductor Leopold Stokowski grew it into eight pieces, from Bach and Tchaikovsky to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, recorded by the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Disney developed a sound system called Fantasound for it, an early form of stereo. Few theaters could install it, and the film lost money at first, but later releases made it a classic.
