The Allegheny Athletic Association hired him for a game against its rival, the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Paying players broke the rules of amateur sport, so the deal was kept quiet.

Heffelfinger scored the only touchdown, picking up a fumble and running it in, and Allegheny won 4-0. The proof, an expense sheet, came to light decades later and is now kept at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
