The Interborough Rapid Transit line ran about nine miles from City Hall north to Grand Central, west to Times Square and up to 145th Street. Mayor George McClellan took the controls on the first run at 2:35 p.m., and the public was let in at 7 p.m.

Its southern terminal, City Hall station, was built as the showpiece of the system, with vaulted ceilings and a curved platform. It is closed today.
