Prime Minister Harold Wilson had nominated the band, and the honors were announced in June 1965. On the day, the four Beatles arrived at Buckingham Palace in John Lennon's Rolls-Royce while thousands of fans gathered outside, and Queen Elizabeth II presented their medals.
The award was controversial: some earlier MBE holders returned their own medals in protest. Lennon later sent his back too.
