Shortcode Reference
Use a WordPress Shortcode block or a shortcode-capable widget to display events. Paste one shortcode for each separate example.
Basic Usage
[herodotus]Displays published events matching the active date mode and global filters, subject to Posts Limit. Configure defaults under Herodotus - On This Day → Settings. Free uses today's date; active Pro may change the global date mode.
Override One Listing
[herodotus layout="compact" category="science" limit="5" excerpt_words="15"]Attributes change this instance. Omitting an attribute usually keeps its default; layout defaults to list. limit="0" uses the global limit and does not mean unlimited. excerpt_words="0" uses the global length, falling back to 25; Compact uses 10 unless explicitly overridden with a positive length.
Random Events
[herodotus_random limit="1" layout="compact"]Shows a random pick from the eligible event pool. In Free, this is today's published events. Active Pro date settings can broaden the pool. Supported attributes are limit, category, layout, excerpt_words and show_image. Limit defaults to 1. The shortcode does not accept the full attribute list of [herodotus].
The plugin caches the eligible pool, then chooses a pick on each uncached page render. Full-page caching can keep the same result visible.
Related Events
Single event pages automatically show an Also on this day list of up to five other published events sharing their month/day. The block is omitted when none qualify. There is no separate related-events shortcode in 1.6.8. Developers can change visibility and count through the documented filters.
RSS and WordPress Dashboard
The event RSS feed is available at /herodotus/feed/. It follows the date query settings and configured limit. The WordPress Dashboard also includes an event widget following the active date settings, with links to manage events.
