Herodotus Pro / Documentation

Categories

Herodotus uses its own taxonomy (herodotus_category) to organize events into groups.

Creating Categories

  1. Go to Herodotus - On This Day → Categories.
  2. Fill in:
  3. Name: "Science" (displayed to visitors)
  4. Slug: science (used in URLs and shortcodes)
  5. Description: Optional description
  6. Click Add New Category.

Managing Categories

The category list shows:

  • Name
  • Slug
  • Number of events (count)
  • Edit / Delete actions

Assigning Categories to Events

When creating or editing a Herodotus event:

  1. Look for the Herodotus Categories metabox (right sidebar).
  2. Check one or more categories.
  3. Save/Update the event.

Category Display

On Event Cards (List Layout)

The category name appears as a label in the card footer, after the title and excerpt.

On Single Event Pages

The category is displayed prominently, often with a link to the category archive.

On Compact Layout

Category labels are hidden to save space.

Category Archive Pages

Each category has its own archive page:

yoursite.com/herodotus-category/science/

This archive uses the category and the active date mode. Free shows today's matching events; active Pro can change the date window.

Filtering with Shortcodes

Display only events from a specific category:

[herodotus category="science"]

Important: Use the category slug, not the display name.

Examples

[herodotus category="politics"] [herodotus category="birthdays" layout="compact"] [herodotus category="music" limit="3"]

Suggested Category Ideas

Category Slug Use Case
Science science Scientific discoveries, inventions
Politics politics Political events, elections
Birthdays birthdays Famous people's birthdays
Music music Album releases, concerts
Sports sports Championships, records
Literature literature Book publications, author births
Wars & Conflicts wars Battles, treaties, declarations
Art art Exhibitions, masterpiece creation dates

Tags and Multiple Categories in Pro

[herodotus category="science,history"]
[herodotus category="science" exclude_category="private-events"]
[herodotus tag="space,astronomy"]

Use slugs. Comma-separated categories match any included category; comma-separated tags match any listed tag. Category inclusion, exclusion and tags narrow the same date query. Tags use the standard post_tag taxonomy. Pro displays tag links on cards and single-event pages unless hidden in Display settings.

Priority Events

Enable Priority Event in the editor or Quick Edit to put an event first within its date group. It does not bypass category filters, date selection, publication status or the limit.
